Veteran director Doris Dörrie cleverly wraps a contemporary romantic comedy around a Grimm’s fairy tale about a wife who can never get enough. Here, the tale begins when Ida, a twenty-something fashion designer, backpacking through Japan, meets Otto and Leo, the “Flying Fish Doctors.” Otto and Leo are scouting for koi fish to resell to rich German collectors, and Ida tags along. Soon, Otto and Ida find themselves “expecting,” and they celebrate their budding love in an avant-garde styled Japanese marriage ceremony before settling into domesticity in Munich. Otto seems perfectly contented to mind the baby and his koi in their cramped apartment, but Ida knits her verve into scarfs—in koi look—and creates stunning new designs that make a big splash all the way to Japan, where she returns with Otto’s former business partner Leo, who is also unhappily married. Ida’s ambition and self-made success, writ large in a riot of color in this entertaining film, seems to ask if modern woman can dare to want it all.
