SUMMER IN BERLIN is a window into the lives and loves of two thirty-something best friends who are so close, they practically share the same balcony in Berlin’s quickly gentrifying Prenzlauer Berg district. Katrin, a single mom, needs to find work and is running the interviewing gauntlet while her young teen son presents the usual parenting challenges. Nike, a caretaker, makes her daily rounds visiting elderly dear, yet quirky clients. When a near accident introduces Ronald, an oddly appealing truck driver, into the picture, Nike’s summer nights are no longer free for all-night chats on the balcony with Katrin. And then Ronald moves in. And relationship issues emerge. A “masterpiece of daily life,” this film offers a light hearted look at the trials and triumphs of two friends who are looking for warmth and on their search, we are treated to a good dose of poignant humor. “Such is life,” as Katrin would say.
