Panel Discussion

FILM & VIOLENCE

PRESENTED BY:

FILM ARTS FOUNDATION AND BERLIN & BEYOND

SUNDAY JANUARY 14 11AM - 1PM GOETHE-INSTITUT AUDITORIUM, 530 BUSH STREET

From the sensational and graphic to the subtle and implied, violence in film is both a reality and a narrative tool used by filmmakers to communicate their message. Several films in the BERLIN & BEYOND FILM FESTIVAL depict and question this theme of violence from a European perspective:

Detlev Buck’s TOUGH ENOUGH / KNALLHART follows the trials and tribulations of a teenager in Berlin’s gang dominated Neukölln district. Andres Veiel in THE KICK explores dialog and recitation as means to convey dramatic action; Mirko Borscht in his debut film COMBAT SIXTEEN shows how a sixteen-year-old from the West is turned into a Neo-Nazi gang member in the East. Matthias Glasner in THE FREE WILL portrays a rapist and his desperate efforts to overcome his destructive behavior.

Several of our guests from Germany will participate in this panel together with Bay Area filmmakers and producers: Nancy Brown is an award-winning San Francisco film and video maker, television producer and editor. She teaches video and TV production to adults and youth, and provides production management for community producers of cable television programs. Most recently she directed INTERVIEW WITH AN EXECUTIONER, a documentary of the death penalty. Kevin Weston is a filmmaker who also works with youth filmmakers such as Miguel Rojas, Cliff Parker and Donny Lumpkins who all have created films about youth and gang violence in San Francisco and Oakland.

The discussion will be moderated by David Liu who has produced, directed and written for film and television. He won an Emmy for producing BIG BIRD IN CHINA. He was Director of Programming at Lifetime Cable Network. Until recently, David was in charge of programming and development at Independent Television Service for many years. His credits include documentaries, children’s series, daily talk and variety shows and long form specials. He is a founding member of the Center for Asian American Media and is still actively involved in that community.
