EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN
TUESDAY JANUARY 16 11PM CASTRO
In November 2004, experimental sound masters EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN took to the stage in and around the gutted remains of East Berlin icon Palast der Republik. The Palast, itself a “Neubau” slated for “einstürzen” (the literal translation of the Berlin-based band is “new buildings collapsing”) was, in the year of its inauguration in 1976, purported by former East German officials to be Europe’s most modern governmental-cultural complex. With German reunification, the bronze-mirrored “Ballast” der Republik became slated for demolition in 2006 because of extensive asbestos contamination. Already stripped to its steel supports in late 2004, the building itself provides the basis for architectural-sound deconstruction in the latest from this long-established band. For this project, EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN is accompanied by a 100-member-strong chorus of volunteers.
