THE INVENTION OF CURRIED SAUSAGE
DIE ENTDECKUNG DER CURRYWURST
Directed by Ulla Wagner
SATURDAY JANUARY 17 2PM CASTRO
Spring 1945, the Allies are approaching Hamburg. Lena Bruecker, in her mid-40s, finds herself alone. Her children have left the roost and her husband has been stationed on the eastern front. Just when life appears to be almost over for her as far as love and passion are concerned it takes an unexpected turn. After an evening at the cinema, which, as usual, ends up in an air-raid shelter, she takes Petty Officer Bremer home with her. Just like that. She cooks for the young man, who reminds her of her son, and offers him a place to stay, at first only for the night, but then until the war is over. A passionate and dramatic love affair unfolds, with the war and nosy neighbors just outside the door who can’t wait to discover a deserter. But the greater threat to Lena’s new life is the impending peace.
